About Acrylic
Acrylic aquariums have a number of advantages over glass. As a result, many aquarists are switching to acrylic designs.
1) They are lighter and stronger
2) They are less likely to break
3) They are less likely to leak
4) Acrylic is clearer than standard glass
5) Acrylic provides much better insulation
6) The seams of acrylic tanks are unnoticeable
7) Tank shapes can be custom made to the desired specifications
8) Tanks can be made with a colored back
9) Access to the tank is via covered portholes minimizing evaporation and providing more temperature stability
10) With the porthole design, there are no top edges that gradually become encrusted with salt built up over time
One advantage that glass has over acrylic is that glass is more scratch resistant. However, scratches can be removed from acrylic whereas it is impossible to remove a scratch from glass. Acrylic tools should be used to clean tank surfaces and only scrubbers that indicate “can be used on acrylic” should be used. Scratching is not a problem if the aquarist uses the proper tools.
