About Live Rock

Live rock is absolutely essential in the marine reef aquarium.  It is also very beneficial in the fish only tank.  Live rock consists of fragments of stony reef material.  It is taken from the ocean with encrusted coraline algae and beneficial micro and macroscopic organisms that live on and inside of it.  The rock is made up of the calcium carbonate skeletons of dead corals, or other calcareous organisms.  Live rock aids in the breakdown of toxic waste products in the aquarium (ammonia), helps clarify aquarium water, and provides a foundation for live corals.  Furthermore, it enhances the look of the aquarium and is very easy to maintain as long as the proper supplements are added to the tank.  These additives will enhance the color of the rock.  Live rock requires moderate lighting and moderate water movement.

Quantity

We recommend 1.5 to 2 pounds per gallon of live rock.  Therefore, a 30 gallon aquarium should have between 45 and 60 pounds of live rock.

Curing

Our live rock is pre-cured, but we recommend doing a final cure of the rock after receiving it since additional die off will occur during transit to your location.  This should be done before it is placed in an aquarium that contains livestock.  This precautionary step will reduce harmful ammonia spikes after the live rock is added to your aquarium.

Island Origin

We receive our live rock from Alor Island, Indonesia.  This is also known as “blue ridge” live rock.  It is top quality and colored with different varieties of coralline algae.
